Reflection Letter!

This is my first year at Everett Community College; I am working to get a degree in physical education so I can become an elementary PE teacher. This English class is needed to get that degree and I chose to take this specific class because I wanted to see the how the full time online classes worked. I have always been pretty good in English but this class challenged my writing. This class helped me to explore my views and expand them.

The main themes have helped me to grow. Identity showed me that everyone has struggles but that it is always easier to change who you are instead of standing up for yourself. In the long run you won’t be happy with whom you’ve become if you’re not true to who you are. The community unit helped to show that everyone needs someone and most everyone has a community even if they aren’t aware of it. That community helps hold you strong when you are falling apart. The tradition lesson is where I learned the most. Tradition is important but not at the risk of sacrificing your own happiness. Sometimes a compromise is necessary to make sure that you aren’t hurting anyone for the wrong reasons. That there is a fine line between breaking tradition to be yourself and breaking tradition to rebel and hurt your family. All of these main themes or lessons have taught me many things and expanded my views on how I see the world.

I chose the four pieces of writing because they show my growth as a writer. The paper that I feel needs to be revised the most is my first essay. That essay I struggled with and being the first essay of the quarter didn’t help either. I feel that this time my growth will shine through and it essay will be a lot better. The writing I chose to show my critical thinking is my timed write #2(two). I feel this write shows my thinking process pretty well. It talks about non-conformity and being yourself. The one I chose based on the audience is the blog about what is in my purse. This blog is like I’m talking to a friend. The audience is my peers, so I tried to write like I talk and I think I did a pretty good job. The final piece I chose for my e-portfolio is my final essay. I chose this essay because it is the last essay for this class this essay hopefully showed my growth in the class and in my writing. I hope that this essay helped you understand me a bit better. This reflection letter has helped me to understand my writing more and I hope it helped you as well.

Intro to Critical Thinking

I chose the timed write number two(2) for my critical thinking essay. I chose this one because I felt that it made its point very clear and known. In this essay I feel like I was writing from the heart. I really worked on the writing process. A part that shows critical thinking well is "When it came time to discuss non-conformity there was mainly two sides, one side agreed with me while the other thought that it is sometimes better to conform to and that you should respect and accept the traditions that are passed down to you" I feel that piece helps show a window into why I picked it for critical thinking.

Critical thinking!

My perception on non-conformity is that if you aren't being yourself you will never be truly happy. When it came time to discuss non-conformity there was mainly two sides, one side agreed with me while the other thought that it is sometimes better to conform to and that you should respect and accept the traditions that are passed down to you. Non-conformity to me simply means being who you are instead of letting the world or your tribe tell you. During the discussion of "Whale Rider" I realized that sometimes conformity can be a good thing but a lot of the time it is just someone changing for someone else.

In the movie "Whale Rider" the main girl, Pai wanted so badly to be treated like one of the boys and for her grandfather to be proud of her. Pai was always getting into trouble because of those two things. Pai didn't follow the traditions like grandfather thought she should, she never conformed to his ideas. Pai stood strong and fought hard to get respect from her grandfather and instead she got disappointment. I don't think that Pai broke the traditions on purpose she was just being a little girl who wanted the approval of her grandfather. Even though her non-conformity caused much drama throughout the tribe. Pai pushed to be just as good as one of the boys and almost died but her not conforming allowed her to gain the respect of her grandfather and become the leader of the tribe, even though she is a girl. This was a main point in the discussion that if you let your true self shine through and fight for who you are you will never be truly happy.

Another main point throughout the discussion was that to some extent conformity is good. If nobody conformed or compromised then the world would be in complete chaos. Sometimes you have to conform like Pai's grandfather did in the end when he realized that sometimes old traditions can change and make new ones that are better. It took along time for him to conform but it is hard for people to change. This part of the discussion is where my perceptions on non-conformity changed.

So in conclusion non-conformity can bring joy but can also bring chaos into the world. The discussion group opened my eyes to see how much trouble the world would be in if there were no conformity. Non-conformity is good when it comes to personal decisions and conformity when it comes to tribe or community decisions unless it hurts the group. Non-conformity is being yourself and following your heart but sometimes you need to compromise to make the world go round.

Retouched Intro!

I chose to revise my first essay. This essay was really hard for me and there were many grammatical errors. I mainly tried to cut down the repetition and make the essay more short and to the point. "In the end all that matter is the way a person feels about their true identity and how the people that person cared about felt about there true identity." This is my main point throughout the essay and I hope that it was made.

Little Things Matter

The choices a person makes make up their identity. Whether or not it’s a regret is a different story. That comes normally when there is a change or a realization that this wasn’t the way that person wanted to be. The little decisions and the way a person chooses to live his or her everyday says more about that person’s identity than a few major choices out of a million minor ones, in which the outside world looks at to get a feel for a person’s identity. Every person makes decisions for different reasons the reasons those choices are made makes up your identity.

Life is full of little choices, choices that most people don’t think twice about. These choices are a big part of people’s identity. The choices that are second nature to a person and says a great deal about their identity. Helping someone might seem obvious to some and crazy to others. In a world where helping someone means something only to the person helped and doesn’t help further that persons career some people might think twice about lending a hand. While others do it without question. That says a lot more about someone’s identity then what college they went to. Life is full of little moments that put us where we are at today. Choosing to ignore a small issue and letting it escalate into a big issue tells someone a lot about a person’s identity. Another example one person might think twice about taking the bus while it is second nature for others. The person who has to think about taking the bus may be used to speed, independence, or maybe that person just doesn’t like having to rely on someone else to get somewhere. There are many reasons why people choose the things they do. Then there are the "big" decisions, the decisions where you talk it out with many other people maybe contemplate it for days before you come to a decision. These choices are the ones that the rest of the world looks to, to get a grasp on that person’s identity. These are the choices that moms will tell everyone about. These choices are the ones that people who don’t know a person judge them on. This is like judging people based on a fact sheet. A piece of paper that tells you when a person was born, if they have traveled and where to, the college they went to and their relationship status. That information isn’t enough to know anyone yet instinctively people judge others based on that knowledge. Often people or judged based on one fact about them, like where they work or even if they work. The person’s true identity is often left in the dust because people don’t take the time to know them because of that one fact they know.
All choices matter but the little ones matter more. The ones about a person’s attitude or the way someone treats someone else are more important to a person’s true identity then the major life decisions. How a person acts and talks says more about that person then where they work or went to school. In the end all that matter is the way a person feels about their true identity and how the people that person cared about felt about there true identity. That lasting impression will be of that person’s real identity.

Audience focused intro

I chose my purse blog for my audience focused piece. This blog is written directly to my peers. In this blog I write like I am talking to a friend, "Actually I need a bigger purse, right now I just haven't found the right one at the right price." This shows the causal talk between the audience and the writer (me). I like this kind of writing the most because I feel like I can write and put my personality into it instead of having to worry about perfect grammar. When I write a regular essay my head gets caught up in the grammar and often times my writing and my grammar suffers for it. Which is why writing this blog I was fully aware of my audience
